Ihre fotografische Laufbahn begann am Schauspiel Köln unter der Intendanz von Karin Beier. Dort entwickelte sie ihre Arbeit als Theaterfotografin und begleitete zahlreiche Produktionen. Unter Stefan Bachmann setzte sie ihre Tätigkeit als Hausfotografin fort und realisierte unter anderem die ersten Spielzeithefte seiner Intendanz.
Anschließend begann ihre Zusammenarbeit mit Andreas Beck als exklusive Hausfotografin am Theater Basel. Diese wird bis heute am Residenztheater München fortgeführt.
Heute arbeitet sie als Hausfotografin für das Residenztheater München, das Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus und die Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Darüber hinaus ist sie regelmäßig für die Salzburger Festspiele sowie zahlreiche Theater- und Opernhäuser in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz tätig.
Neben der fotografischen Begleitung von Inszenierungen entwickelt sie Bildkonzepte für Spielzeithefte, Kampagnen und Publikationen. Zu ihren Auftraggebern zählen unter anderem das Schauspiel Köln, das Theater Münster, das Staatstheater Karlsruhe und das Nationaltheater Weimar.
Langjährige künstlerische Zusammenarbeiten mit Regisseur:innen und Intendant:innen führen sie regelmäßig an weitere Bühnen im deutschsprachigen Raum.
Ihre eigenen, künstlerischen Arbeiten bewegen sich im Bereich Reportage, Abstraktion und inszenierter Fotografie.
Ihr Ausstellungsprojekt -Eine Welt, viel Gott-wurde in den Feuilletons viel besprochen und als Wanderausstellung an vielen, verschiedenen Orten gezeigt. Zuletzt als Einzelausstellung Im Landtag NRW. Eine frühere Präsentation entstand in Kooperation mit dem Theater Basel und wurde von der Oper, unter der Leitung von Stefen Delany, mit einem eigens entwickelten Programm begleitet.

Sandra Then works as a photographer in the fields of theater and opera, portraiture, and photojournalism.
Her career in photography began at the Schauspiel Köln under the artistic direction of Karin Beier. There, she developed her work as a theater photographer and documented numerous productions.Under Stefan Bachmann, she continued her work as the theater’s resident photographer and, among other projects, produced the first season programs of his tenure.
She then began collaborating with Andreas Beck as the exclusive resident photographer at the Theater Basel. This collaboration continues to this day at the Residenztheater in Munich. Today, she works as the resident photographer for the Residenztheater in Munich, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. In addition, she regularly works for the Salzburg Festival as well as numerous theaters and opera houses in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In addition to photographing productions, she develops visual concepts for season brochures, campaigns, and publications. Her clients include the Schauspiel Köln, the Theater Münster, the Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and the Nationaltheater Weimar, among others. Long-standing artistic collaborations with directors and artistic directors regularly take her to other stages throughout the German-speaking world.
Her own artistic work spans the realms of reportage, abstraction, and staged photography. Her exhibition project—“One World, Many Gods”—received extensive coverage in the arts sections of newspapers.

Most recently, it was presented as a solo exhibition at the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. An earlier presentation was created in collaboration with Theater Basel and was accompanied by a specially developed program from the opera, under the direction of Stefen Delany.
